Social Entrepreneurship
Above and Beyond
I love entrepreneurship, especially when it benefits people, the earth, or the economy. I love generating and executing innovative ideas. I even joined Enactus and traveled to the national competition as a part of the US National Champion team in 2018 where we won for the second time in a row.
Project Case Study
Feed The Chickens

The Problem
For one whole year, I worked on a social business project where compost bins would be located on campus and in dorm rooms. I worked out the whole budget, disposal, and education aspects of getting this project started but I was always hitting dead ends when it came to approvals. Then after Covid 19 affected us all, the sustainability center on the BYUH campus approached me and asked for my help in collecting food waste to feed their chickens. They had previously been using restaurant scrapes but now restaurants were closed and their chickens weren’t getting enough food.
The Solution
Finally, I got permission to implement a compost plan! I was given one team member and together we made educational flyers, ordered bins, and delivered materials to the dorms on campus with instructions on sanitation and collection. We also advertised and posted education infographics around campus, as well as making a promotional video to teach people why their food waste was important to us.
The Outcome
We had a lot of success. When collected daily, each bin had food waste in it and people loved the sustainability of the project. The local community even took notice and wanted to know what they could do to be more sustainable with their compostable waste. In the end, we saved room in the landfills, fed chickens, and spread awareness and education about the benefits of composting.
